MP’S BACKING FOR CHILD MIGRANT APOLOGY

Stourbridge MP, Lynda Waltho, has welcomed the Prime Minister’s apology to the many people, and their families, who were sent to Australia as child migrants, often separating them from the UK roots they might otherwise have established.

Following the Australian Government’s apology to child migrants, who suffered abuse in Australia, the UK Government committed to taking responsibility for the part the UK played in mistreatment of child migrants and apologising for the suffering they were subjected to. Last week, Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologised on behalf of the country, to those affected by forced removals overseas.

Lynda said: “It’s right that we apologise when things go wrong and I welcome the Prime Minister’s apology to the child migrants who were sent to Australia and other countries and mistreated when they got there.

“Many of the children who were sent to Australia, and their families, believe that the decision to send them overseas, amounted to forced deportation. It is right that the Government apologises for the part it played in this.

Discussions with child migrants revealed their desire to hear an apology on behalf of the country and the Prime Minister delivered this apology last week.

Lynda Waltho MP concluded: “I know local people will agree that while the suffering of child migrants began a long time ago, we’ve taken the chance, as a country, to put this right. If any constituents have been affected by the former policy of child migration, I’d encourage them to get in touch, to see what help the Government can offer them.
