COUNCIL VOTE CALL TOO LITTLE TOO LATE
COUNCIL VOTE CALL TOO LITTLE TOO LATE
Dudley Council has come in for criticism from Stourbridge MP, Lynda Waltho for failing to inform people about their right to vote.
Following a statement by council chief, John Polychronakis, about voter registration, Lynda Waltho MP has hit out at the Dudley authority’s weak approach to making sure people are on the electoral roll.
Lynda Waltho MP said: “However people want to vote, it’s important that they have the chance to. The council is doing the bare minimum to make sure people are on the electoral register. Dudley Council’s voter registration drive is too little, too late.”
An annual canvass of voters takes place every autumn, with forms to every property local property. A new electoral roll is set to be published by 1 December, but Dudley Council have been slow to make sure peoples names are on it, despite coming in for criticism from council watchdogs for not helping people with the voter registration process.
Lynda Waltho continued: “I can’t believe that even after the council ombudsman critcised them so strongly, Dudley Council still have a ‘slap-dash’ approach to voter registration. There has to be a general election next year and it worries me that Dudley Council aren’t preparing properly for it. If they’ve missed that, who knows what else they’ve forgotten about too?”
“Everyone should have the choice to vote and if people are worried that Dudley Council aren’t helping them get on the electoral roll, they should contact my office on 01384 374356 for advice on making sure they’re registered.”
