LET THE PEOPLE BE HEARD URGES LOCAL MP
A local MP is calling on Dudley Council to make sure that everyone who can vote is given the chance to do so, by making the annual collection of names for the electoral roll as efficient as possible.
Lynda Waltho MP has written to Dudley Council chief, John Polychronakis, to make sure they’ve done all they can to register as many people as possible before local or national elections are called. The local authority, criticised by the Electoral Commission for being under prepared for elections, is being given guidance to make sure that future elections give as many people as possible the chance to vote.
Lynda Waltho MP said: “Although the General Election has yet to be called, council officials in Stourbridge should be working hard to make sure that all eligible residents can have their say on polling day.
”Dudley Council, responsible for our electoral register, has been criticized for not being ready for elections in the past. I’ve written to the Chief Executive to make sure they’re doing all they can, so that however people want to vote, they get the chance to do so.
“With online registration and the chance to register throughout the year, it’s easier than ever for people to register to vote; but they’ll only know that they can if the council’s doing all they can to tell them.
With a General Election certain to be called before June 2010, local MP, Lynda Waltho wants everyone, whether it’s the first time they’ve voted, or they’ve been voting all their life, to have the chance to do so.
Lynda Waltho MP concluded: “Every household should receive a form to register to vote this autumn. If people haven’t received a form, they can call my office for advice on how to obtain one, on 01384 374356”
