MP BACKS TENANCY CHEAT CRACKDOWN

Local MP, Lynda Waltho, has backed plans to give people confidence that Dudley Council is acting fairly to allocate public housing and clamp down on tenancy cheats, to free up houses for those who need them across the area.

Lynda Waltho MP said: “Local people deserve access to high quality, affordable housing. The Government is providing £1.5 billion to make this possible.
“Investment in housing is good, but local taxpayers want to know that they’re not being held up on the housing waiting list, and having the money they’ve paid in tax, wasted by people who have a council house they’re not entitled to. These plans will help put a stop to that and I welcome them”

Radical steps to cut down housing tenancy cheats follow the announcement of a massive £1.5 billion housing investment for the construction of affordable homes to start within months, which will offer construction jobs in the short term and housing for thousands in the long term.

The plans show the Government taking action to provide secure, affordable rented public housing. They will also allow the local authority powers to take action and improve local housing for local people.

This anti-fraud drive, the first of its kind, could free up between 5,000 and 10,000 homes for those who need them over this and next year. It includes a data sweep of housing and benefit records, and new practical advice for councils and housing associations to catch tenancy cheats – including setting up local hotlines and special crack squads to investigate reports of fraud.
